The Production Process

Jevanika LLC is a manufacturer of furniture made of reclaimed teak wood from Java, Indonesia.

We work in the contract/commercial sector with clients across the US.  What makes us unique is our ability to develop a line of furniture specifically for one client.

Old homes like this one are purchased and we use every part except the tile roof.

These girls are standing by an old part of their home.   It is much more prestigious to own a brick home than the old teak home.  Its a win-win situation for them, us, and the environment.
Most of the wood is roughly 60-80 years old. Many of these pieces will be sold as art.

Here is an example of  pillar bases that support the roof of a structure.  They are called "Ompaks".  We will utilize four of these as the legs of a coffee table.

Some of these old timbers are big enough to be large legs on a dining table.  As illustrated, the wood is very rough in nature.  We then leave the wood  rough for a rustic look or plane it down for more contemporary pieces.

Once we acquire the wood, it is brought  to our factory below.

Once at the factory, we put the wood in the kiln to dry for approximately three weeks.  Since it rains almost every day in Java, the humidity is very high.  Therefore, even old wood needs to be dried  to 12% moisture content.

Even after the wood has been dried, there is still a possibility of the wood acquiring moisture from the high humidity.  That is why the construction methods are so important to allow for shrinkage, especially  when the furniture is put into the desert areas of the United States.

After the wood comes out of the kiln, the management at the factory go over the drawings and begin making  templates to work from. in production.

Once the templates have been designed, the wood is then cut and production begins.

After the furniture is constructed and sanded, the final process is the hand rubbing of the stain.  We currently have four stains that we offer to our clients.  This  is not an exact process.  The charm of hand-crafted and hand-stained products is that each piece is unique to itself.  The best curing method is to let the furniture dry in the open air.  Several layers of stain are applied and dried in the hot sun.

The final steps are loading the furniture  into the containers.  We ship 20- and 40-foot containers.  The furniture is either carefully boxed or cardboard wrapped to prevent damage.  If it is boxed, only about half as much will fit in a container.  Delivery times are approximately four weeks on the water to the West Coast of the US.

Below are are few photos of some of the staff.  Note, we do not use any child labor at our factory.  Many of the workers are from remote regions of Java.  We have provided  them housing at the factory.  They will stay at the factory during the week and return home to the countryside on the weekends.   The mode of transportation for most of the workers is by motorcycle.
